Vintage Plastic + Tin Wind-Up Astro Captain NASA Astronaut with Sparks, Daiya, Japan, 1960’s. A vintage plastic and tinplate clockwork “Astro Captain” NASA Astronaut toy with white plastic body and helmet, red plastic arms and legs, tinplate lithographed face and chest plate with red plastic panel, made in Japan by the Daiya Co. in the 1960's. It has a forward walking action with moving legs and sparking in the red chest panel. The toy is 6.25 inches tall by 3.5 wide and 3 inches deep and is all plastic except for the tinplate face and chest plate. It is in good used condition with some marks, a small crack to the top of the helmet and a stress crack to the back of the lower body. When wound using the built-in key, the astronaut moves forward with moving legs, swinging arms and still sparks well in the chest. It occasionally gets stuck when moving forward – there is a metal plate at the rear of the base and this needs to be at the right angle to enable the toy to slide forward. It looks also like the plastic key has had a repair, so care needs to be taken when winding up (turn the key in the middle). No apparent makers mark, just marked with “NASA” on the helmet front. A nice vintage plastic and tinplate working Nasa Astronaut, hard to find in any condition, that would make a great addition to any collection of robots, space or clockwork toys.
