This pan was found in Georgia and was probably made in the South. Condition: As cast with a five-inch gate mark on a smooth bottom. Early Deep Chicken Fryer Pan, Raised Sideways No. 11 on Top of Flat Handle, Smooth Botton /w Slash Mark? Five-inch slash mark suggests pre-1890s? Rim has slight flare and is .25-inches thick. Diameter is 11.25-inches. Height is 3.5-inches. Weight is 8 pounds, 1.6 ounces. Pre-1890s cast iron cookware could be made by anyone with a foundry operation (for example, blacksmiths), access to fine sand, and the knowledge to make a mold or pattern off another cast iron pan. At times free prison labor was used to make cast iron pans. This pan is unbranded, but fairly well made. It has imperfections on the cooking surface, but it functions well.
